Mr. Sounthararajan Pirabakaran, Being born to a goldsmith family in Jaffna, is currently involved in making coconut shell crafts as a source of his income. He is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering and has also studied jewellery designing in India.
Due to few unfavourable circumstances and a great loss in his jewellery business, Mr. Pirabakaran has lost all his property and belongings. He is now in a very vulnerable condition and finds it very difficult to run his family with three school going children and face the financial needs.
He had been making coconut shell crafts and presenting them as gifts to his friends and relatives, even though he was once involved in jewellery making. Happily in the last year he has been very successful. People have said there haven’t been many such beautiful creations like these seen in Sri Lanka. He is currently involved in making a design of the Nallur Temple with each and every detailed sculpture in it. He says that he will never stop doing these crafts as they have turned out to be his passion.
